I used Garden Planner to lay out my formal garden to scale and to keep track of all my Australian native plants in the more informal 'bush garden' section. It took a bit of practice and trial and error, but I love using it now I've got the hang of it.
It's very flexible and precise: you can triangulate positions, stipulate the spread of trees and bushes and vary the flower colours using the palette. You can also add height, which is vital now the 3D version is in beta. Make your mac much louder mactips. That's given a whole new perspective (obviously) when picturing your design. The sample plant icons are mainly European/North American, which required some fudging when it came to them impersonating Australian plants, but I can live with that until some eucalyptus trees come along! I can thoroughly recommend it, especially with the free 3D upgrade. This software is quit powerful and is exactly what I was looking for. While not the current version (6.0 is most current), it is very comprehensive.
I strongly suggest that: 1) any buyer use the tutorials included; 2) have your measurements ready to plug into the program when you actually begin the design process, and 3) while watching the tutorials, make a 'draft' version of what project you want to create (like a kitchen) and don't worry about getting it perfect - while you learn the program! This is a CAD type program and can seem rigid/unforgiving. The 'undue' and 'edit' elements are very helpful when needed. Very useful software for the price. There is a learning curve; but, after an hour or so, it was easy!
My use was in designing/redesigning a remodel job in our home. I first created some 'as-built' drawings for the existing structure; then began adding the addition and the remodeling of the existing space. My contractor is using the drawings now to finalize the price of the work. We're still making minor tweaks to the design. The camera view tool is really a help for me to visualize the impact of the changes.
I downloaded this product a few days ago. I also have the hard copy coming, but I really needed to get on my project. Within 3 hours of buying it, I was able to project an overhead for four lots to scale, providing me a landscape plan for a proposed land purchase.

It was pretty intuitive to work the package. But I couldn't get a path to display. Another online purchase and having to send emails for support and no return calls. Email sent Saturday at noon. 1st thing Monday AM, a call from support.
